Slides Rite works with six manufacturers across two tiers and one specialty category. Factory Fit: TruStile (Denver, CO — 400+ styles, 20 wood species, limited lifetime warranty) and Koetter Woodworking (Borden, IN — hand-assembled, vertically integrated, 60+ years). Field Fit: BHI/Trimlite (Tampa, FL — local availability), Steves & Sons (est. 1866 — largest family-owned door manufacturer in the US), and Barncraft by GlassCraft (barn door specialist). Acoustic partitions: Woodfold (Forest Grove, OR — STC ratings up to 41, ASTM E90 tested).
Every door system we install comes from a manufacturer we have specifically chosen to work with. The selection isn’t arbitrary — each one is in our lineup because it does something specific well, and together they cover the full range of what our customers need, from premium Factory Fit custom builds to reliable Field Fit standard doors and acoustic accordion partitions for commercial applications.
This article covers who each manufacturer is, what they make, and when a project points toward one over another.
What is the difference between Factory Fit and Field Fit manufacturers?
Factory Fit manufacturers build the door itself to your exact opening specifications — custom dimensions, custom design, custom materials. Field Fit manufacturers produce high-quality standard-size doors that we source and then engineer a custom installation approach around. The tier determines what is custom: with Factory Fit, the door; with Field Fit, the design and installation method. Both result in a finished installation that looks like it was always part of the home.
Factory Fit Manufacturers
TruStile — Premium Factory Fit, Made to Order
TruStile is based in Denver, Colorado, is owned by Marvin, and is one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of architectural interior doors. Every door is made to order — built to the customer’s exact specifications, never pulled from a warehouse shelf. Their catalog covers more than 400 door styles in MDF and 20 standard wood species, with 66 panel and sticking profile combinations and 64 material insert options including glass, resin, leather, and metal.
For customers who want something that doesn’t exist in any standard catalog, TruStile will fabricate from a custom drawing — which means if you’ve seen a door somewhere and want it replicated, that is a realistic option. Their manufacturing process uses genuine stile and rail construction throughout, never routing or stamping, which produces crisp and architecturally correct lines across every profile. TruStile carries a limited lifetime warranty on their door products and is FSC certified, meaning the wood they use is sourced from responsibly managed forests.
TruStile is the right manufacturer when maximum design flexibility is the priority — premium materials, non-catalog configurations, or a project at the high end of the custom door market. This is the manufacturer behind our most custom and most high-end Factory Fit projects.
Koetter Woodworking — Hand-Crafted Solid Wood, Vertically Integrated
Koetter Woodworking has been operating in Borden, Indiana for over 60 years on an 83-acre site that includes the original farmland where founder Tom Koetter was raised. The facility covers more than 641,000 square feet and operates as a vertically integrated manufacturer — they process and kiln-dry their own lumber on site, with a dry kiln capacity of one million board feet. That level of control over the raw material from the beginning of the process through the finished door is rare in this industry and directly affects the consistency and quality of what comes out the other end.
Every door Koetter manufactures is hand-assembled using traditional stile and rail construction from some of the finest hardwoods available. The company is family-owned and has maintained a reputation over six decades for craftsmanship and customer service that larger corporate manufacturers struggle to replicate. Koetter offers extensive customization in species, profiles, glass options, and size, and their doors are available custom-built to exact opening dimensions.
Koetter is the right manufacturer when the project calls for a custom-built solid wood door with the character and quality of fine furniture — particularly in traditional and architectural styles where warmth and wood grain are central to the design direction. Where TruStile is the natural choice for contemporary and highly custom configurations, Koetter is the choice when the home has a traditional character and the door needs to feel like it belongs to that language.
Field Fit Manufacturers
BHI/Trimlite — Local Florida Sourcing and Fast Lead Times
BHI was founded in Tampa, Florida in 1954 as Builders Hardware Inc. and spent nearly 70 years building a reputation as one of the most reliable door distributors in the state. In 2022, BHI was acquired by Trimlite, a manufacturer and distributor of residential doors and related products operating since 1982. The acquisition expanded BHI’s product offering significantly, adding Trimlite’s interior door line — which includes shaker and traditional stile and rail designs in both standard and modern profiles — to what had been primarily an exterior door operation.
BHI operates out of Tampa and services the Florida market with a depth of local product knowledge and lead times that out-of-state suppliers can’t consistently match. For Field Fit projects in the Tampa Bay area, the local relationship and reliable availability make BHI the first call for most of our standard door sourcing.
Steves & Sons — Established 1866, Largest Family-Owned Door Manufacturer in the US
Steves & Sons is the oldest millwork manufacturing company in the United States still under the same family ownership. Founded in San Antonio, Texas in 1866 by Edward Steves, the company has grown through six generations of family ownership into the largest family-owned door manufacturer in the nation, producing over ten million doors annually from plants in Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, and Georgia.
Their interior door product line covers panel doors, premium wood doors, glass panel doors, flush doors, bifold doors, and more. The company has invested heavily in its manufacturing infrastructure — tens of millions of dollars in plant expansions and advanced robotics — while maintaining its commitment to American manufacturing. Their premium wood door line includes solid wood stile and rail construction in a range of species and profiles that performs well in Field Fit applications where the customer wants a genuine wood door rather than an MDF skin.
Steves & Sons is the right manufacturer when a Field Fit project calls for a premium wood panel door in a standard size, or when the breadth of their catalog gives us more design options for a specific project than a single-supplier solution would.
Barncraft by GlassCraft — Purpose-Built Sliding Barn Doors
Barncraft is a purpose-built sliding barn door manufacturer based in Houston, Texas. Where BHI and Steves & Sons cover the full range of interior door types in standard sizes, Barncraft is specifically designed around the sliding barn door category — with a level of product development and design variety that general interior door manufacturers don’t offer in that format.
Their product line covers multiple design series in materials including mahogany, knotty alder, birch, MDF, and metal and glass combinations. Several of their hardware series include soft-close as a standard feature. Barncraft is the right manufacturer when a Field Fit project genuinely calls for a surface-mounted sliding door and the customer wants design variety and quality hardware beyond what a standard supplier can offer in that format.
Acoustic Partition Manufacturer
Woodfold — Acoustic Accordion Partitions, STC Ratings up to 41
Woodfold has been manufacturing accordion doors and acoustic partitions in Forest Grove, Oregon since 1957. They are the only manufacturer in our lineup whose products are specifically engineered and tested for acoustic performance. All other products we install provide sound separation as a byproduct of their construction. Woodfold builds products where sound control is the primary engineering objective.
Their acoustic accordion partition systems are rated by STC — Sound Transmission Class — a standardized measurement tested under ASTM E90 procedures. Woodfold publishes field-tested STC ratings for each series. The Woodfold acoustic partition series we offer:
H4100 — Dual wall partition with continuous vinyl fabric. STC 41. Heights available to 12 feet.
4188 — Dual wall partition with 8-inch MDF panels. STC 41.
4166 — Dual wall partition with 6-inch MDF panels. STC 41.
3300 — Dual wall partition with 4.25-inch MDF panels in laminate or hardwood veneers. STC 33.
H3100 — Dual wall partition with continuous vinyl fabric. STC 31.
An STC rating of 41 means that loud speech on one side of the partition is reduced to a faint murmur on the other — the level of acoustic performance that makes a classroom function as a classroom, a therapy room function as a therapy room, or a church multipurpose space divide cleanly into two independently usable rooms.
Woodfold partitions are custom designed and manufactured to suit the specific dimensions of each installation. They can follow curved track configurations and be specified with pocket wall capability — where the partition folds completely into a wall cavity and disappears from view when the space is fully open. Woodfold sells exclusively through an authorized dealer network. Slides Rite is an authorized Woodfold dealer.
Woodfold is the right manufacturer for any commercial or residential application where space flexibility and documented acoustic performance are both requirements — churches, schools, hotels, office spaces, event facilities, and residential spaces with large open floor plans where a defined acoustic boundary is needed.
The bottom line
The manufacturers in our lineup are there because each one does something specific well, and together they cover the full range of what our customers need. TruStile and Koetter handle Factory Fit projects at the premium end of the market. BHI/Trimlite, Steves & Sons, and Barncraft handle Field Fit projects across the range of standard door types. Woodfold handles acoustic partitions where sound control is the primary requirement. Which manufacturer is right for your project is part of what we determine on the design consultation — once we understand the opening, the design direction, and what the door needs to accomplish.
